DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Over the weekend, the FDA approved the Johnson and Johnson one shot COVID-19 vaccine which could majorly affect the number of vaccinated people in the country.
“So I’m happy to report that we now have three highly affective weapons in our war against COVID,” Southeast Health Chief Medical Officer, Dr. George Narby said.
Despite many feeling the unease of the shot’s effectiveness, doctors are assuring people that it is ready to help.
“And the J and J, the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is as effective at preventing hospitalization and death as the other two vaccines currently authorized by the FDA for emergency use,” Narby said.
The Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is not only as effective as the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines but it also gives a huge advantage to streamline the process of administering those shots.
With this new vaccine, it could double the number of people vaccinated and would not have to worry about patients coming back three to four weeks later to receive their second dose, or booster shot.
“It expands the number of people that can be vaccinated so give a number of doses, it can vaccinate twice as many people with the Johnson and Johnson vaccine as with either the Pfizer or the Moderna vaccine,” Narby said.
Once the Johnson and Johnson doses reach Southeast Alabama, this could be a huge help to drive-thru vaccines, with people not having to travel back a second time.
But for now, people will still have to receive two doses to ensure their safety.
