KINSTON, Ala. (WDHN)—The Coffee County Sheriff’s office provides school resource officers for five school campuses.
That includes four schools in Coffee County, as well as the Elba City School Complex.
Now tonight, WDHN’s Mike Gurspan “profiles” the day in the life of Kinston SRO “Anthony Hattaway.”

Walton County, Florida native Anthony Hattaway has been the school resource officer
at Kinston School in rural, Southwest Coffee County for the past two-and-a-half years.

As with any of Coffee County Sheriff’s office five school resource officers, Deputy Hattaway’s, main
responsibility” is maintaining security and safety at the rural, k-through-12th grade
facility.

But, he’s also tasked with being an educator, mentor, and support for students
who often don’t come from a stable, parental home environment.

“It’s really one of the most rewarding aspects of law enforcement and the best decision I ever made in law enforcement was becoming an SRO. If I’m having a bad day, or just not feeling good I can go to the elementary side and see the kids and see the kids. I’m a celebrity among them, they love seeing officer Hattaway coming.”

Mike Gurspan says “Coffee County Sheriff Dave Sutton says deputy Hattaway and the four other SROs’ in the Coffee County and Elba City School Districts are making a big difference.”

Coffee County Sheriff Dave Sutton says “Mike, any bit of information we look into it. Something that has been made up by a child or whether it’s actually in case that we need to investigate.”

Deputy Hattaway says he wants the students to know that he’s their friend,
and they can talk to him about issues they may be facing on campus, as well
as outside the school realm.

SRO Hattaway adds “You come to work, have a good time with the kids, and form relationships with them that will last a lifetime.”

Once the school ends on the 25th of this month, Hattaway will be available
as a “full-time” road deputy until the start of this summer of the 2022-23 academic year.
