DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) —For 90 days, Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba has challenged the people of Dothan to get out and walk a mile a day.
During that time, Dothan Leisure Services highlighted trails around the city and gave Dothan residents an opportunity to talk to the mayor about upcoming projects.
Mayor Saliba told WDHN it has been a success.
“I hope that it’s helped some people and given them the encouragement to wanna get out and walk and strive to complete the 90 days,” Saliba said. “Maybe then they’ll want to continue on and realize what the health benefits are.”
According to Saliba, he received questions that ranged anywhere from parking permits to questions about the park. Mayor Saliba wasn’t the city leader to participate. Commission members and various department heads also participated.
“It gets the citizens to get to know their department heads and whose in charge of the different areas,” Saliba said. “Like leisure and services and planning, engineering, all of them have participated.”
Resident Lori Perkins has done all 90 days of the challenge. She said she has enjoyed the challenge.
“I think it’s great,” Lori Perkins said. “I think we need to get more people doing it and I think we need more sidewalks here in Dothan so more people will walk.”
