OPP, Ala. (WDHN) — As well as school administrators across the Wiregrass, Opp City School Superintendent Mike Smithart is also keeping a close eye on the COVID numbers.
Smithart says he is disturbed by seeing the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Covington and surrounding Wiregrass counties.
At the end of the last school year in May, numbers were on the decline, but now, Smithart says more and more young people are contracting the virus and with the varients it appears to be a lot more contagious. It’s a bad combination with the start of school just around the corner.
“We’re asking local folks to help us out with that decision,” Smithart said. “We should be getting some guidance from the state over the next few days or over the next week and that will certainly help us tailor our decision making concerning masks or any other requirements we might have.”
The first day of school in the Opp system is Monday, August 9.
