OPP, Ala. (WDHN)—The Opp Chamber of Commerce planned to “re-start” a popular Summer event that was canceled the
last two years due to the pandemic.

But, WDHN”s Mike Gurspan says chamber officials are being “forced”
at this time to “cancel” due to bad weather in the City of Opportunity Friday night.

Main Street was to be “closed” to vehicular traffic. Its “Downtown Get Down” event was to run from 6:30 to around 9:30 Friday night.

A bandstand was set up outside of city hall, and the local group “Five Runs” was to provide the music. Except for “food trucks”, the event was to be free to the public.

In the Summer of 2019, “Downtown Get Down” proved to be a great success. But, it has been a “no show” the last two years due to the pandemic.

Opp Chamber of Commerce Director, Kelly Brandin, says the project is to reinvigorate the downtown area. This event helps to bring attention to our downtown businesses, Young’s Florist, Southern Style those types of businesses, and Wheelhouse Restaurant.”

Mike Gurspan says “the Opp 2022 business of the year award went to Young’s Florist. An employee says the get-down event here in the downtown district will showcase their business along with everybody else.”

Young’s Florist has been in business in Opp for over 60 years. For its owners, it’s important to make a good impression on those coming to the “City of Opportunity” for the first time. Although it’s been canceled Friday night, they hope it can be re-scheduled in the near future.

Lori Sasser of Young’s Florist says “exactly, folks visiting Opp and maybe folks camping out at our state park. And they can come down and experience the shop places.”

Brandin hopes to once again make “Downtown Get Down” a monthly event during the Summer.

Opp Chamber of Commerce officials will look to “reschedule”
the “event. We’ll let you know when a new date is set on wdhn dot com.
