Scammers posing as Coffee Co. sheriff, Federal Reserve attempt to swindle citizens

Local News

COFFEE COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a new phone scam that is threatening people with fake arrests.

According to the CCSO, citizens have been getting calls from people saying they represent the Federal Reserve System. The callers then tell the victims that they have a warrant out for their arrest on a money laundering charge.

The caller then tells the victim that they are speaking with a Coffee County Deputy to fix the situation. One caller even claimed to be Sheriff Dave Sutton.

The victims are told to transfer money from their bank and send it to an unknown account.

The CCSO said it does not call people to get payments for arrest warrants. Anyone who is called by these scammers should call local law enforcement.
