WALTON COUNTY, Fl (WDHN)— Skeletal remains, confirmed to be human, and a weapon was found in a heavily wooded area in Miramar Beach, per the Walton County Sheriff’s Office

According to the WCSO, the bone fragments have been confirmed as human by the District One Medical Examiners Office.

While conducting an extensive search of the area, a firearm was found within close proximity of the fragments.

Because of the state and decay of both the bones and the weapon, it appears both have been in the area for a long period of time, per a WSCO release

The Walton County Sheriff’s Office responded to Leeward Drive on October 20, after a resident found what appeared to be a human jawbone while clearing a lot located near a residential street.

The scene was preserved overnight and additional grid searches were completed on Friday, October 21.

The scene is spread out because of the length of time the bones have been out in the elements. Once all the evidence is collected, we will work closely with the Medical Examiner’s office to identify who it is and what may have occurred
