DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — After a tragic Dothan apartment fire left one woman dead and four families without a home, the community has stepped up to help with their healing.

Families are picking up the pieces left behind after a fire engulfed an apartment unit in the Grace Terrace apartment complex, on Headland Avenue Monday morning.

The fire, that left one woman dead and the entire second floor of the building destroyed, has displaced four families from the home that they knew.

In response to the tragedy, the Grace Terrace property manager and property owner are doing everything they can to help their tenants cope with all they lost.

“Going there to see the devastation of the tenants has been very troubling,” Property Manager, Anita Dawkins Weatherington said. “I have done and still am doing everything that I can do to help ease some of their stress.”

All families were moved to a new apartment within the Grace Terrace complex and received a $1,000 furniture voucher from the complex owner.

In addition, the Wiregrass Area Food Bank has supplied food to fill their pantries. Several Wiregrass churches have donated supplies in an effort to help these families begin to heal.

Everyone affected by the fire is still in need of basic items such as clothes and kitchen supplies. Now, Weatherington is asking the community to donate anything they can.

“I feel like it’s our responsibility as a community, as a business owner, and just as a servant of God to help alleviate some of the stress and pain they are going through,” Weatherington said. “Loving thy neighbor is loving thy selves. And helping our neighbor through this tragic time is my primary focus right now.”
