GENEVA, Ala. (WDHN) — Two Geneva High School students have made big waves in the 74th annual Destin Florida Fishing Rodeo.

The young men have captured The Big Mack classic crown which is sponsored by McDonald’s restaurant corporation for the largest king mackerel.

Will Sexton is a freshman at Geneva High School and last month he reeled in a 45lb king mackerel to win the junior division Big Mack Title worth $10,000 dollars in prize money funded by McDonald’s restaurant corporation.

Will’s dad, Billy Sexton who is the father-and-son boat captain of the S.S. Mullet, took first in the Senior division.

Will says, “My favorite part is making memories with my father and making memories with all the big charter boats that go fishing every day. It’s just we’re big competitors.”

Tayte Lothian is a tenth-grader at Geneva High. He and Will are good friends and fishing buddies.

He also competes on the school’s bass fishing team. Many consider fishing an individual sport, but he and Will push each other aboard the S.S. Mullet to even bigger catches.

Lothian says, “It’s really fun bringing big fish to the stage and weighing them in and getting the whole crowd to go wild. It’s nothing like it getting up early and going out feeling the wind, the waves, and all that good stuff.”

On Sunday night, Will and Billy Sexton along with taste received prizes for doing so well in the Big Mack competition which falls within the 74th annual Destin Florida Fishing Rodeo. One of Florida’s oldest and most prestigious deep sea competitions.
