Wiregrass Area Food Bank seeking donations to maintain operations

DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — WDHN is teaming up with the wiregrass area foodbank in order to assist feeding America’s distributors.

While things at the food bank are a little bit different right now, the organization is still getting food out to the people who need it the most

“Food is available; food assistance is available so you don’t have to fear that there’s not going to be enough food because there is,” assistant director Julie Gonzalez said.

With fewer agencies to distribute the food, the Wiregrass food bank is still giving out a higher percentage of food.

“We’re doing 80 percent more distribution,” Gonzalez said. “We gave out more than 500,000 pounds during the month of April. We’re doing it without food drives so what we’re having to do is take the food that we have here in the warehouse, and give it out to agencies, and they’re having curbside distributions.”

Gonzalez also said food drives and fundraisers are crucial to maintain a steady flow of supplies.

“We don’t have it to give if you don’t give it first,” she said. “So we need the wiregrass’s help in order to keep restocking the food banks so that we can continue to have a supply to give out.”

If you want to help, you can call the food bank at 334-794-9775, visit the food bank’s website, or donate via check by mailing it to 382 Twitchell Road in Dothan with a 36303 zip code.
