ENTERPRISE, Ala. (WDHN) — Mildred Colleen Slagle celebrated her 100th birthday Sunday with family in Enterprise.
Mildred was born June 6, 1921, in Hewins, Kansas. She’s endured the Great Depression, experienced the tragedy of the Dust Bowl, watched America stand still when the Hindenburg exploded, lived through World War II and a global pandemic.
She also told WDHN she experienced great love.
Mildred met her husband when they were 15 years old. They went on to have three children: Donna, Martha and Nancy. All of whom helped their mother celebrate her latest birthday.
“I think it’s great that my mother is 100 because it doesn’t happen that much today,” Donna said. I hope I’m fortunate enough to make it there one day.”
“I never thought she would make it here after dad passed away in 2010,” Nancy said. “They always say the heart cannot go on without the other person and for here to keep going as long as she has is just outstanding.”
At the age of 100 Mildred enjoys watching the news and playing the organ. But her favorite hobby is knitting.
From all of us at WDHN, happy birthday, Mildred!
