DALE COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — September is the month to spread awareness about childhood cancer.
The month marks national awareness for the deadly disease.
At G.W. Long High School, through donations brought in by students, they raised over $1,240 this year for childhood cancer.
A close friend who lost their two-year-old child to cancer inspired teacher and cheer coach, Laura Ashley Bynum.
The money raised is going towards the Children’s Cancer Research Development Institute, in memory of that friend.
“It was really exciting,” Bynum said. “It was exciting to get to send that check off to see what we can do for childhood cancer. It’s just to raise awareness for them.”
This was the first time the high school and elementary competed against each other on who can raise the most money.
Bynum is happy to raise awareness in an interactive way.
