DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — During Tuesday’s city commission meeting, city commissioners approved a resolution that awards a $150,000 contract to a design workshop for the Highway 84 East Corridor plan.
“This is a plan that we developed in concert with the city probably back in 17 and 18 we basically looked at the area from downtown to ACOM we’re trying to identify strategies to help that part of the city to develop,” Planning & Development Director Todd McDonald said.
One aspect of the plan has already been put in place which is the sidewalks between downtown Dothan and ACOM making the area more pedestrian-friendly due to the influx of ACOM students and more medical services.
The design workshop will help design overlay districts for three different areas along the corridor – the downtown Dothan area, the wellness district surrounding Southeast Health, and the ACOM area.
Todd McDonald with the Dothan planning commission says they are in the beginning stages of a long process but he believes the workshop will implement the best strategies for this area of Dothan.
“They will do a public involvement process and they do these things all over the country, so they know all of the different tools that are available to help with these kinds of things,” McDonald said. “They’ll be able to ascertain what’s appropriate for Dothan or what’s not appropriate.”
McDonald says to stay tuned because there will be a lot of opportunities for involvement soon.
