SAMSON, Ala. (WDHN) — Geneva County Schools recognized one of its own for being named its first semifinalist in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship program.
Davis Mckenzie, a senior at Samson High, serves as the drum major of the tiger band and participates on the school’s math team.
Mckenzie scored 1430 on the SAT college entrance exam — a score that is among the best students in the country.
Davis is now in the company of 16,000 other national merit semifinalists who can compete for 30 million dollars in scholarships.
He said he’s grateful to his teachers and parents for preparing him to get to this point.
“Really just them teaching me the value of perseverance and continuing to try at something you want to accomplish really just no matter what setbacks you have just continuing to try and push to where you like to be,” Mckenzie said.
Davis applied to Mississippi State, Auburn, and Alabama and plans to major in Biomedical Science.
National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring of 2022.
