DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The Wiregrass Panhellenic Council is making sure children have all the essentials to begin the school year.

The council that’s made up of greek fraternities and sororities spent the Saturday having a back-to-school giveaway at Walton Park.

They gave away pencils, pens, paper, folders, and about 400 clear backpacks — they even provided the community with food.

The items were donated by various organizations in the community as well as from members of the fraternities and sororities.

Panhellenic Council President Mackroyce Corbitt says it’s great to give back to the community and make someone smile during challenging times.

“Times are hard, people are struggling financially and this is just a great opportunity for people to come to get something for free and dont have to pay for it,” Corbitt said. “Its great that all the organizations came together we pulled our funds.”

Corbitt said this is an annual event and with the continuing support of the community they can make the event bigger and better for years to come.
