DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — District three encompasses the south-eastern part of Dothan.

This year is the first year since 2011 that Houston County District 3 Commissioner Albert Kirkland has run opposed, but he is looking forward to what the next chapter in his life brings.

“I’ve enjoyed the ten years I’ve been in,” Kirkland said, “I’m older and I’m settled and I hope I have represented Dothan well in the ten years I’ve been in.”

However, his long career hasn’t stopped him from campaigning.

“We have been campaigning, speaking at forums, we spoke with a republican group at the administrative building last night,” said Kirkland. “Every weekend doing some fliers, that kind of thing, I got my picture on the billboards.”

And his opposition, Bradley Bedwell is doing the same.

“District three has a lot of neighborhoods, and we have been in every single one of them,” District 3 Candidate, Bradley Bedwell said. “Walking to the houses, meeting the people, hanging signs on the door, talking about the issues and the opportunities of district three.”

As far as issues in the area go, both candidates had their own vision for the future, with some overlapping ideas.

“The main issue I have found while walking houses and going through neighborhoods is that our residents aren’t feeling they are being heard and answered,” said Bedwell. “If you stay out here and ask them what they need, they will tell you. They need a senior citizen center locally where they can go and interact.”

Commissioner Kirland echoed a similar sentiment about getting a senior center.

“There have been some complaints about not having a senior center in that area,” said Kirkland. “Fix the roads. So the Honeysuckle Road project and we see where other cities have rebuilt their downtown. Now we can do the same thing, we just have to do it.”

Election day for all Dothan municipal elections is August 3. Voters in district three who live in Cloverdale or the neighborhood behind Publix will vote at the National Guard Armory on Third Street. Voters elsewhere in district three will vote at the Farm Center.
