SLOCOMB, Ala. (WDHN) — This week we enter round two of the postseason for AHSAA football and several Wiregrass schools will fight to keep their state title hopes alive.
Slocomb is on a six game win streak and this week they’re looking to keep that streak alive with a victory over Hillcrest Evergreen in round two of the playoffs.
Kicking off the postseason last week, Slocomb trailed at half time but that didn’t rattle the team.
“They kept playing hard, kept doing the things we need to do to be successful,” Head Coach Richard Tisdale said. “Defense played lights out. I think offense played really well. We didn’t get a lot of possessions. We only had one punt. We had one turnover we’d like to have back. But the kids played hard no matter what the score was and that’s what you want to see.”
The Red Tops beat Dadeville 28-16 to advance and host again in round two.
They’ll take on the Hillcrest Evergreen Jaguars who came in second in 3A region one.
The Jags come into this matchup on a three game win streak and a 6-5 record.
“We know that they’re big up front,” senior Clay Smith said. “They’re well coached and they have some good, fast players. We just have to put in more effort than they put in and we have to push harder than they do for four quarters.”
The Red Tops haven’t made it past the second round since 2003.
“It would mean everything to us to advance to the third round,” senior Josh King said. “Last year we got stopped in the second round, but we got full momentum going this week and we can keep on going after that.”
Whether it’s the home crowd or not having to travel, Slocomb is ready to be back in Red Top stadium for round two.
“Playing at home is huge,” Tisdale said. “We get to stay in the same routine having a big crowd here that’s going to be loud, it’s going to be good. They have to travel a pretty good way to get here so hopefully they get out of their routine a little bit and we keep doing the same thing and playing a home is always better.”
The Red Tops and the Jaguars kick off Friday night at 7 p.m. in Red Top Stadium.
