Geneva County girl’s basketball team grows as a family on and off the court

HARTFORD, Ala (WDHN) — The Geneva County girls basketball team is 13-5 and are winners of six straight.

The bulldogs have a deep team but are led by Senior Karoline Striplin but she is not the only Striplin that leads Geneva County.

While most parents are watching from the stands, Karoline’s mom and dad are standing courtside, coaching.

Karoline stripin has dominated the court this basketball season….But this is nothing new for her, the tennessee signee has been doing this since she joined the program

Having already signed to one of the most historic programs in college basketball, Tennessee, Karoline could have been complacent this year, content to coast till she heads to Knoxville.

But her two coaches, who double as her parents, both former Auburn student-athletes, won’t let her do that.

“I definitely think that plays a big role, also they just know what it takes to play college ball so I feel like from a young age they have instilled that work ethic into me and that has helped me into the player I am today,” Striplin said about her parents pushing her.

But when it comes to her athletic ability, who does Karoline get it from more? Mom or dad?

“She really is more athletic than I am, she is faster, more explosive, really a beast in the weight room. But, I have more hand talent, you know I am kind of of that target guy so I would say it is a good mixture of both,” said Karoline’s dad, Jim Bob Striplin.

Having coached Geneva County for some years, the Striplin family has seen their off the court family grow in size, thanks to basketball.

“You know we have five seniors and lots of tenth graders that compliment each other and they are a good mix of a great family so I would say that we have thirteen daughters,” Karie Striplin said.

That is a feeling that is mutual from the players as well.

“Personally I feel like our team chemistry is a lot stronger than last year and by far this has been my favorite year of basketball because we are all so close…it is more like a sisterhood than anything,” said Senior forward Anzu Davis.

And for Karoline, watching her teammates and family grow throughout the years is the icing on the cake, for a team that is also riding a six game winning streak.

“It has been awesome to watch them grow up with me, our friendship has grown as our skill has grown and it has been awesome to play with them.”
