DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — Every year the Dothan Eagle puts together a Super-Twelve team for the best Wiregrass athletes in various sports. This year given the circumstances they have awarded the best male and female athlete.
Winning the award for the guys was Geneva County’s Emmanuel Henderson.The rising junior had a great year racking up 3200 all purpose yards while scoring the rock 45 times. Henderson averaged almost 200 yards a game on the ground and tied the state record for kick return touchdowns with six.
He also excelled on the basketball court averaging 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
“I am excited, it means a lot to me to be chosen athlete of the year. There are a lot of athletes around here in this area so it means a lot,” Henderson said.
Winning the award for the girls was senior Mary Beth long from G.W. Long. The three sport athlete was also placed on the super twelve teams for volleyball and basketball….Long will be playing volleyball at Auburn University at Montgomery.
Long led the Rebels to a AA volleyball state title and almost did the same in basketball falling just short in the state semifinals. In volleyball she recorded over 800 hundred kills, 100 aces, 317 digs and 137 blocks. On the basketball court she averaged 18 points a game as well as seven rebounds.
“I was very excited, it caught me off guard when I heard the news. I was not expecting that, usually you either get Super-Twelve or player of the year but to be named female athlete of the year was very exciting for me,” Long said.
The Eagle also gave away a Coach of the Year award. Dyneshia Jones led the Charles Henderson girl’s basketball team to a perfect 29-0 season as well as to the State title game.
