ASHFORD, Ala (WDHN) — Today’s high school football preview, we venture over to Ashford to take a look at the Yellow Jackets.
The last few years, Ashford has fallen into losing ways, having losing seasons since 2015.
That may come to a change with the addition of Robin Tyra at the helm. Coming from Abbeville, Tyra brings with him a strong sense of winning football as well as the knowledge of building a program.
Before making the playoffs for three straight seasons, Abbeville had their struggle in the first few years of the Tyra campaign.
This may be expected with Ashford but coach Tyra has confidence that his guys will be successful if they buy in.
“Make sure that our focus is on each rep, each play, and getting better. What can we do to improve as an individual, what can we do to improve as a whole. What am I going to offer into it and what will be my role as a player at Ashford. To make us the team that we can be,” Tyra said of his new team.
With the loss of Deshontae Kirkland, Kehion Walker, and Emmanuel Pittman the Yellow Jackets will be replacing guys who had impacts on both sides of the ball.
Ashford start their season with a preseason exhibition game against none other than Abbeville High School.
Now representing a different Yellow Jacket squad, Tyra is poised to have his team prepared to play football.
“As it gets to week zero it becomes business, you know it is a game. Those kids up that I have coached up there, I’m sure they know how I am. If there is any pieces of me that I have left there, they are thinking the same thing,” Tyra said.
After that scrimmage, the Yellow Jackets will be on the road against their long time rival of Rehobeth. The two schools have played each other in week one since 2014.
