DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The stage is set for the 2021 Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic.

Sixteen teams from across the Wiregrass will compete in the biggest basketball tournament in the area during the last week of December.

Organizers and coaches are especially excited to have it return to the Dothan Civic Center after having to cancel last year due to the pandemic.

The four Dothan schools get the four corner spots and from there coaches drew alphabetically for draw order, then drew for placement.

On one side we have Providence Christian facing Daleville in the first round, a big Henry County rivalry matchup between Headland and Abbeville, Georgiana, who won the Turkey Classic to join this tournament, takes on Eufaula, and Dale County faces Houston Academy.

Headland Head Coach Sammie Jackson says playing rival Abbeville round one makes the tournament even more exciting.

“I feel pretty good,” Jackson said. “We have a good draw. It will also give our kids a chance to get some exposure. The kids also like just being in that environment so it’s going to be exciting for everybody.”

On the other side of the bracket we’ll see Dothan face Geneva, Wicksburg battles Barbour County, another rivalry matchup in round one between Ashford and Rehobeth, and finally Geneva County making its first appearance in the Hoops Classic taking on Northside Methodist.

“It kind of emulates postseason play because it’s a big arena, the court is bigger, the backdrop behind the goal is different,” Geneva County Head Coach Josh Thompson said. “It really helps us for the future, hopefully, when we get to postseason.”

The tournament takes place at the Dothan Civic Center December 27-31.
