DALEVILLE, Ala. (WDHN) — This fall, the Daleville Warhawks will take the field trying to turn a new leaf.
The Warhawks won only one game last year but with a new coach at the helm the team is only looking forward.
First-year Head Coach Will Garner comes to Daleville from Charles Henderson where he served as defensive coordinator the last two years.
“It definitely is different,” Garner said. “I used to ask the questions of, ‘Hey Coach, what should we do here?’ Now I’m the one being asked so it’s a little bit different, but it’s been great. I wouldn’t change it for anything, and especially being in a place like Daleville makes it even better.”
He took over the Warhawks in February and he’s ready to turn the Class 3A Region Two program around.
“They’ve slowly started to mature and kind of police themselves, making sure that they’re there and making sure they’re doing the right things. We have a long way to go, but it’s been a good situation that we’ve walked into and we’re trying to get ready for the fall. Positive vibes every single day, making sure that our program is on the climb back up.”
The focus this season: compete, compete, compete.
“Our thing is making sure that we handle the little things and what we can control. Learn how to compete on Friday nights and the winning will take care of itself.”
The Warhawks are young this year, but garner is confident his team will grow into some standout athletes.
“We may be the youngest team in the state when you look at it, but we got some guys that are going to be some big time future players in the Wiregrass.”
Daleville’s offense will be run heavy and defense is focused on stopping runs.
“In our region if you don’t stop the run, you don’t win ball games, so that’s kind of our philosophy and that’s kind of what we’re trying to build on.”
Garner is confident it won’t be long before the Warhawks are back on top.
“Daleville wins football games. It was not too long ago that they were winning a lot of football games and that’s kind of what we’ve got to get back to. Just that a little bit of swagger and that little bit of change to compete and play on Friday nights.”
The Warhawks will host the Elba Tigers in the first game of the season on Aug. 20.
