SKIPPERVILLE, Ala. (WDHN) — It’s a big week for the G.W. Long Rebels as they prepare for the first round of the AHSAA baseball playoffs.

The Rebels have been dominant all season long and plan on making a deep postseason run.

G.W. Long is no stranger to winning state championships.

With 16 total, Long won three straight from 2017 to 2019. This team is hungry for another.

“It would mean a lot,” senior Jackson Dasinger said. “I only have one ring. Some of the guys on this team have two so it’s always better to add to that.”

Before they can think about a state title they have to make it through the playoffs.

The Rebels take on Isabella on Friday to get that run started.

“We feel like we’re prepared, we’re battle tested, but at the same time whenever you get in the playoffs it becomes a whole different season so we’ve just got to worry about playing one game at a time and do well in each individual inning and see where that takes us,” Head Coach Drew Miller.

Long is the top ranked team in Class 2A, but the Rebels don’t pay attention to that.

They’re focused on doing their own best day in and day out.

“It’s just coming out here every day and just doing what Coach Miller tells us to do,” senior Trevor Morris said.

“We swing the bats well so if we put the ball in play, our defense makes routine plays and we throw strikes as pitchers we feel like we’ll have a chance to win,” Miller said.

Experience is on the side of the Rebels. Miller says this season they played the toughest schedule they ever have.

The team came out 24-7 and the Class 2A area three champions.

“We’ve been playing together for a very long time, so we meshed together really quick,” Dasinger said. “We don’t have to worry about anything like that. We’ve always got each other’s back. We just try to come out here every day and compete with each other. We always want to be better.”

“A lot of the chemistry with playing other sports helps a lot,” sophomore Bryson Mccrea said. “It comes into play as soon as we step on the field.”

The Rebels host the Mustangs on Friday at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. with a tiebreaker at noon on Saturday if needed.
