DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — The Eddie Brundidge era at Houston Academy kicked off with a win on Friday night.
The new head coach and the Raiders beat the Kinston Bulldogs 44-19.
Now, Brundidge hopes the team can run with the momentum they have from his first win at the helm.
Brundidge has been an assistant at Houston Academy the last three seasons.
His last head coaching gig was from 1998-2003.
“I was just telling the guys how big a victory this was, not just for myself but for the school, for the program and for them,” Brundidge said. “A win is big. Especially it being the first win in the first game of the season. It was huge for us.”
Houston academy went 11-20 the past three seasons, including their 3-7 season last year.
Brundidge believes this team has a shot at turning that record around.
“It was a good starting point. We have a better feel of where we are and we’re able to go back and make some corrections this week.”
Friday night the Raiders take on Bayside Academy.
The Raiders fell to the Admirals 44-3 last year.
“We’re hoping to redeem ourselves a little bit this year. We think we can match up with them a little bit better. Hopefully we can take some momentum from this first game and take it into Friday night’s contest.”
Key to this Friday’s win and something Brundidge has been working on since day one is focusing on the little things.
“We’re going to take each game as a learning experience and we’re going to build from it. If I can just get these kids to play hard play as a team, I think we’ve got a chance. I think we can build on that.”
Coach Brundidge also said while the roster’s numbers are small, the younger player’s game experience from last year will help this season.
