DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — Young athletes got the chance to play on the hard wood at the Dothan Civic Center Thursday morning.

Dothan Hoops Basketball Training partnered with the Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic to host a free youth basketball clinic for eight to 11-year-old kids.

Forty kids worked on the fundamentals of the sport through: ball handling, passing, shooting, defense and agility drills.

At the end of the program each player walked away with a certificate and a brand new basketball donated by Church at the Crossing.

Organizers say the goal of the clinic is to get kids interested in basketball because the younger they have experience with the sport, the better.

“Our goal is to be a feeder program for the school systems here,” said Darius Brown, owner and lead trainer of Dothan Hoops Basketball Training. “We’re trying to partner with all the schools to try and help them with their player development so that by the time they get to middle school and varsity level they’re ready to hit the court and ready to go straight into game planning.”

Brown hopes to make the kids clinic an annual event in partnership with the Downtown Dothan Hoops Classic.
