NEW BROCKTON, Ala. (WDHN) — Consistency is key for the New Brockton Gamecocks, as they try and return to the playoffs after a rough 2020 campaign.

It’s Head Coach Zack Holmes third year leading the team and he wants to see a season more like his first in 2019.

The Gamecocks have had a mostly successful program, making the playoffs 10 out of the last 12 seasons, but as they made their debut in 3A ball last year the Gamecocks came up with only one win out of eight.

The team had to miss a few games because of COVID-19.

Holmes believes playing consistently play in and play out is key to turning their record around.

“If you look at some games last year we would come in and dig a hole or people take advantage of some stuff and get up on us and then we would play pretty good in the middle and finish,” Holmes said. “We’ve got to start better and then be more consistent as we move throughout the game.”

A big help for the Gamecocks will be senior QB Kaden Cupp.

Over the last three seasons he’s earned almost 4,000 passing yards.

Holmes has been impressed with how he and other veterans on the team have stepped up as leaders.

“The closeness of that group I think is really filtering down into the team,” Holmes said. “I’ve been impressed with them holding each other accountable and in today’s world I think it’s hard for teenagers to do that. They get told to be nice to everybody and all that so they really don’t want to get on to each other so our guys are doing a good job of doing that in the correct way and motivating each other and competing. We’re working on playing with an edge.”

Holmes is taking it one step at a time to bring the team back to its playoff days.

“Every week we just want to be 1-0,” Holmes said. “I think the lesson I learned last year was be thankful for what you have and don’t look too far in the future because last year you didn’t know what that future was. I think our goal is to be 1-0, and that’s my expectation every single week.”

The Gamecocks open their season at home against the Cottonwood Bears on August 20.
