ASHFORD, Ala (WDHN) — The Ashford Yellowjackets are preparing for a fresh start as they prepare to hit the field for a new football season. After a challenging 2-7 record last season in 3A Region 2, which earned them a sixth-place ranking in the region, the team is ready to turn the tides under the guidance of their new head football coach, David Stapleton III.

Stapleton III brings a renewed energy and enthusiasm that has resonated with the team. One notable improvement is the surge in player numbers, reportedly doubling from last year. This boost in player participation is a promising sign for the Yellowjackets as they strive to make a mark in the upcoming season.

On the offensive front, the team will look to senior wide receiver Cameron Fields and junior Coy Paramore to lead the charge. Their experience and skills are poised to contribute significantly to Ashford’s offensive strategy. Meanwhile, the defense will be anchored by the talents of junior middle linebacker Wesley McLendon, whose athleticism is anticipated to make a big impact on the defense.

A noteworthy aspect that unites these standout players is their status as multi-sport athletes. This diversity in sports backgrounds speaks to the versatility and dedication that the Yellowjackets bring to the field. As Ashford experiences growth from athletes of varying backgrounds, the importance of building camaraderie and unity is paramount.

Speaking on the team’s dynamics, Coach Stapleton emphasized, “As a coaching staff, we get along. I think our players see that, and I think our players feed off of that. Even though we’ve got baseball players that have never played and basketball players that have never played, I think they’re starting to come together, and I think there’s less and less cliques.”

The Yellowjackets are set to kick off their season with a game against Graceville, Florida, on August 25th.
